Linking unemployed graduates with employment opportunities

Educational magazine show Hluvukani aims to create awareness of the availability of learnership opportunities and explains how to access these opportunities. The series supports President Mbeki's request during the State of the Nation address for programmes linking unemployed graduates with employment opportunities.

“We hope to increase the number of skilled South Africans and contribute towards reducing unemployment. Hluvukani shows how communities and organisations, equipped with the knowledge of learnership opportunities, can benefit and assist in the reduction of unemployment,” explains Masetha Serakoana, commissioning editor at SABC Education.

Hluvukani has taken into consideration industries with shortages of skills in each province and tried to link unemployed graduates to a variety of learner-ship opportunities, some related to 2010 FIFA World Cup, Asgisa, Gautrain and other government socio-economic programs.

Masetha says, “Each episode takes viewers on a step-by-step process on how to access learnership opportunities at various companies in immediate regions across South Africa. Details of industries are profiled to show school learners the basic requirements needed to enter into the particular field or industry.”

“The companies participating in Hluvukani allow three graduates to spend a day at the organisation, the graduates take part in challenges and interviews which culminate in the company selecting one, two or three of the graduates to participate in their learnership programme, enabling them to gain experience,” concludes Masetha.

Jude Tshisevhe is the presenter of Hluvukani, broadcast on SABC2, Saturday mornings at 8.30am until 8 December 2007 in XiTsonga and Tshivenda, with English subtitles
