Disney channel goes 24 hours

Launched on MultiChoice’s DStv platform on 25 September 2006, Disney Channel initially broadcast for 16 hours a day, seven days a week. Six months later, due to popular demand, viewers are now able to enjoy Disney Channel 24 hours a day, transmission of which commenced Thursday, 1 March 2007.

Says Rob Gilby, MD Disney Channel UK, Scandinavia and Emerging Markets, “We are delighted that Disney Channel has extended its broadcast hours only six months after launch. From day one we have made a huge impact on the South African market, and continue to rank the number one kids channel in multi channel homes, which demonstrates there is a real appetite for Disney Channel programming.”

According to MultiChoice GM of content Aletta Alberts, Multichoice had been inundated with requests for the channel to be broadcast 24 hours.

Disney Channel signed a multi-year deal with MultiChoice in August 2006 to bring Disney Channel for the first time to over 1.3 million DStv subscribers across South and sub-Saharan Africa on DStv channel 82.
