Independent commission of inquiry to interview SABC staff
As part of the SABC's process of investigating its policy on the use of independent political analysts, the independent commission of inquiry has set aside three days - 21, 22 and 24 July 2006 - to interview SABC officials and staff. Until this phase of the process has been completed, no further comment from the corporation will be made, according to the statement issued to the media.
"We are encouraging SABC management and staff who may be able to assist us to come forward," says commissioner Zwelakhe Sisulu. "We have done some initial work and now need to build an understanding of the news division's policy and approach on the use of commentators and analysts. The more information we have, the better equipped we will be to fully understand the situation."
He adds, "In line with our mandate from the group CEO, Advocate Dali Mpofu, we are aiming at a rapid but rigorous inquiry. We are also, obviously, going to ensure that anybody who wants to make a submission can do so without fear or favour."
To assist with its work, Sisulu and fellow commissioner Advocate Gilbert Marcus have enlisted Rhodes Journalism Professor Guy Berger, who was recently awarded the 2006 Nat Nakasa Award, as an expert resource.
