Building kits issued to Imizamo Yethu residents affected by fire

Humanitarian relief, such as hot meals, blankets and food parcels, is still being provided.
The enhanced emergency kit includes nails, poles, galvanised corrugated steel roof sheets, a door with a lockset or padlock, and a window. All of the timber poles that are handed out as part of these kits have been treated with fire-retardant paint prior to being issued.
Improving living conditions
In an effort to improve the living conditions in Imizamo Yethu, the City is investigating the possibility of electrifying the area.
"In addition, we remain committed to our Imizamo Yethu Phase 3 Housing project, for which the tender process is commencing in March. It is hoped that the installation of bulk earthworks and stormwater infrastructure will commence later this year. This should take approximately 18 months to complete, following which top-structure construction will commence. The top-structure construction phase will take about two years," says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements Councillor Benedicta van Minnen.
