#Newswatch: Nando's takes Gareth Cliff off the menu

This development has come after Gareth Cliff gave no space to One South Africa Movement member, Mudzuli Rakhivhane, and dismissed her point of view of how she experiences racism.

Rakhivhane was debating the nature of the DA’s campaign posters in Phoenix on the episode, which aired on 21 October, with DA leader John Steenhuisen. During this debate, Cliff said that the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) have put out reports that found racism was extremely low on the list of their priorities and concerns.

Rakhivhane responded by saying that these individuals do not experience the type of racism she does on a daily basis, to which Cliff responded that her, “personal experience is completely anecdotal and unimportant to all of us”.

It was to this incident that Nando’s responded with the withdrawal of their support and sponsorship, saying in a release that “Nando’s is of the view that Gareth Cliff failed to create an environment where free speech was possible.”
