5fm’s new DJ line-up

Legends such as Alex Jay and Phil Wright are being replaced and Barney Simon is being given less air time, making way for fresh up-and-coming talent such as Gareth Cliff, Koula and Roger Goode. Programming remains hit radio - "If it's a big song, it's on 5fm first," says Nick Grubb, 5fm Programme Manager.

Leading the charge will be the experience and undying passion of Mark Gillman, Ian F, Sasha Martinengo and Just Plain Darren. These four legends of South African radio will be joined by the best up-and-coming talent our industry has to offer in Gareth Cliff, Koula and Roger Goode.

The new team is an unstoppable combination of wide-eyed enthusiasm, superior skill and a willingness to walk the edge that will create a hit music radio format unlike anything this country has ever experienced.

"This is an extremely powerful talent pool of radio personalities," commented 5fm's acting Station Manager John Langford, "Irrespective of when listeners choose to tune in, our DJs will provide cutting-edge music and programming."

Morning drive

The morning drive with The Mark Gillman Show will continue to provide thrilling entertainment and chart-topping music. The Prophet, Reuben Goldberg and Kevin Fine will be keeping Mark company from 6am, kept in check with the increasingly vocal contributions of producer Catherine Strydom, who adds a touch of feminine class to the breakfast mix.

Daytime

At 9am, the reigns will be handed over to Ian F for three hours of slick, contemporary and interactive morning radio. Ian will provide at-work listeners with top-class tunes and essential views from around the world.

Daytime listeners will soon become intimate with Sasha Martinengo, who moves from a fantastic run on night radio to host a new lunchtime show. The "Italian Stallion" will effortlessly take 5fm through each afternoon with plenty of giveaways and audience interaction.

Just plain Darren will continue to highlight the best hit music, and his studio banter with John "Baldrick" Walland and the rest of the gang is sure to put listeners in a good mood on their way home. Between 6pm and 7pm, he'll also bring you up to speed on the world of sports from the mouths of the newsmakers themselves.

The latest news from current affairs and sports to celebrity gossip and music trends will be brought to audiences by the familiar voices of Reuben Goldberg, John Walland, Ray White, Leigh-Ann Mol, Kevin Fine, and newcomer Fenly Foxen throughout the day.

After-hours

"Our after-hours programming is formidable," commented Nick Grubb, 5fm Programme Manager, "These DJ's have a combination of youth and enthusiasm that will provide motivation to the night-shifters, relaxation to the light sleepers, and a soundtrack to the home-comers."

Weeknights will kick off with the outspoken Gareth Cliff at 7pm, whose brand of uniquely South African radio is sure to draw a countrywide audience. Listeners should expect the unexpected – nor should they be surprised to find themselves tuning in every evening to find out what Gareth will get up to next.

Nicole Fox takes over the 10pm to 1am slot from Barney Simon, offering a new dimension to one of 5fm's most loyal listener groups. Barney's distinctive imprint will still be felt when he joins her every Tuesday and Thursday with special music features for South Africa's mosh-pit fans. The show will be musically edgy, with the best artist interviews and recording industry gossip to be found on South Africa's airwaves.

Dicksy, who is already familiar to late-night 5fm listeners, will be in the studio from 1am with his laid-back grooves. Koula, the youngest member of the new team and a bright talent to watch, will be on air from 4am to 6am every morning, sharing her energy and love for music before the onslaught of Mark Gillman and his crew.

Weekend

The weekend schedule sees some big changes with larger-than-life personalities sharing the microphone. Koula will join Ursula "Brown Sugar" Stapelfeldt to create an exhilarating and girl-power driven Fanta World Chart Show, while Tony D moves to join Gareth Cliff as co-host of the flagship Coca-Cola 5fm Top 40 each Sunday, replacing the "F and Martinengo" team of the past.

With his wacky manner and guru-like music knowledge, Roger Goode takes over from Derek 'The Bandit' on Friday nights from 1am. 'The Bandit' will host the Citi Golf World of Dance on Saturday nights from 7pm, handing over to Roger again at 11pm to keep the beats flowing for South Africa's clubbers.

Steve Kirker will host a show of dedications, requests and contemporary tracks on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 4-7am.

Now a household name, Mark Pilgrim will continue to provide light-hearted commentary and great music during the weekend breakfast slots, with Kevin Fine's electrifying and essential "Impact Zone" show embracing all that is street culture on Saturday evenings.

Zuraida Jardine, another icon of South African television, keeps her popular Saturday afternoon slot, and will also host an intimate new show of smooth vibes on Sunday nights.

Nicole Fox and "The Motorola New Sound Selection" moves a little earlier to 2pm on Sundays bringing you the latest chart and play-list releases. At 5pm, Barney Simon will host his own 2-hour slot featuring groundbreaking South African music and the all important, definitive Modern Rock Chart.

Programming

"There has been some speculation about the format of 5fm," added Grubb, "But it is 100% hit radio. Our programming is cutting-edge pop, rock, dance, hip-hop and R&B, and 5fm is an ardent supporter of home grown talent. If it's a big song, it's on 5fm first!"

After twenty-seven years as the nations premier Top-40 station, 5fm's experience and ability to continually reinvent the South African radio landscape have earned them the title of the nation's first choice in music radio.

"Listener's should brace themselves for what is to come," added Langford, "Everyone within 5fm is rearing to go and provide our audience with nothing less than the best entertainment on the planet!"
