The launch of the commemorative coin is in celebration of the 100-year anniversary of the Union Buildings.

The R2 coin will be introduced from early next year and will form part of the range of coins available throughout the country.

On the face of the coin‚ there is the South African Coat of Arms‚ the year of issue with "South Africa" written in isiXhosa and Afrikaans while on the obverse there is an image of the Union Buildings.

The coins would be minted by the South African Mint‚ a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank.

"Over the years various themes celebrating SA have been featured on the sterling silver crown‚ which is a popular collectors' coin‚" the Bank's head of communications Hlengani Mathebula said.

"The SA Mint will issue the sterling silver R2 crown commemorative as a limited edition of 1‚000 as well as a part of a collectors' set‚ containing the crown‚ the circulation coin and 20 commemorative postage stamps‚" Mathebula said.

"These sets will be limited to 700. Both the sets and the R2 crown will be available at the SA Mint and Coin World," he added.
