Empowering future leaders

The Citizen is the media partner for the annual Valued Citizens empowerment initiative that ensures that scholars from disadvantaged schools have the chance to develop their creativity, the newspaper announced earlier this week.

Since its inception seven years ago, founder Carole Pondetti-Ngono has dedicated her time and energy to schools in the Free State, Gauteng and Limpopo Province to ensure scholars are able to actively express their creative talents and leave a legacy through the annual Valued Citizens art book.

"The Citizen is proud to be associated with a project of this calibre. If we want to see our country grow and prosper then we need to actively start investing in the lives of the youth and not just sit back in the hope that someone else will take the action," commented Greg Stewart, publisher of The Citizen "As Goethe said 'knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do'."

Development of responsible citizenship

The Valued Citizens programme focuses on the development of responsible citizenship, teaching the youth about our constitution as well as their rights, encouraging discussions to enable them to make positive choices regarding their future. "The programme has delivered incredible results, for example, 84% of the learners saying 'no to drugs' and 76% feeling it is their mission to fight crime," says Podetti-Ngono.

The annual Valued Citizens art book is developed by the scholars under the guidance of prominent South African business leaders, artists and educators. Various captains of industry such as Alan Knott Craig, Jay Naidoo, Nolita Fakude and Raymond Ackerman contributed to the art book by sharing their leadership wisdom with the youth.

The theme for this year's book, "Leadership Fables" features "Golden Rules from Leaders for the Youth". Comprising 30 inspiring artworks and poetry compiled by grade five and nine pupils, learners have had the privilege of attending art workshops by the likes of renowned artists Isa Gesseau Schwartz, Bongi Bengu, Shui-Lyn White and even famed cartoonist Zapiro.

Proceeds to fundraising

All proceeds of the Valued Citizens art book will go towards fundraising for the continued sustainability of the NGO and all original artwork will be auctioned off at the annual gala event at the Sandton Convention Centre on Wednesday, 5 December 2007.
