Farm workers maltreated says report
South African wine and fruit farm workers are being denied access to drinking water, cannot wash their hands and do not have access to toilets according to media reports published by the Mail & Guardian and Fin24.
A report compiled by Human Rights Watch entitled Ripe with Abuse details the daily experiences of 121 000 farmworkers in the Western Cape and says that these people are exposed to harsh treatment from employers, exposure to toxic pesticides and are denied basic human rights.
The M&G says that in addition to the shocking working conditions described in the report, the workers earn among the lowest wages in the country.
Fin24 says that labour inspectors have failed to ensure that farmers comply with health and safety regulations and are even refused sick leave after being injured while at work.
