Media invited to media regulation workshop
A two-day conference entitled "Regulations and rights" - on the roles and responsibilities of Africa's media - is being hosted next week by the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF) and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) Journalism Department in a bid to enrich the debate on media rights and regulation, and to encourage a broader African continental perspective.
Participants have been invited from 19 African countries from the ranks of government, editors, regulators and civil society, as well as a member of the British Press Council and a Canadian Information and Privacy Commissioner.
The topics for discussion will be:
- The right to know and access to information
- Models of regulation
- Issues in self-regulation
- Transformation and democratisation in the media
- The role of government
- Mechanisms of accountability
This event is supported by the British and Canadian High Commissions.

Conference dates: Wednesday 9 March and Thursday 10 March 2011
