Stephen Tanzer reviews Vergelegen Estate wines

Stephen Tanzer, editor and publisher of the International Wine Cellar, an independent journal, translated into French and Japanese and read by wine lovers in 28 countries, has favourably reviewed Vergelegen wines.

Based on the US 100 point scoring system, Tanzer awarded eight of the eleven wines tasted, a score of at least 90 points. The 2009 Estate White Blend, received a score of 94+ points and the 2004 Estate Premium Red Wine received 94 points.

"It is an accolade to receive such a consistently high rating across a wide range of wine," said Vergelegen MD Don Tooth. "This is an important milestone in recognising South Africa as a leading performer in the notoriously competitive top league of world wines."

"Excellent ratings like these for South African wines are of tremendous value, not only for the producers involved, but also for the South African category," said Wines of South Africa (WOSA) communications manager Andre Morgenthal. "When awarded by critics, such as Steve Tanzer, they have a positive knock-on effect in other markets such as the UK, Asia and India."
