Launch of the 46664 volunteer campaign for World AIDS Day
Nelson Mandela has called upon all South Africans to join the fight against HIV/AIDS: "I would like all South Africans to stand together in support of their brothers and sisters. By uniting as a country, and showing a willingness to take action, we can begin to deal with this crisis that is threatening our country."
In response, business and civil society are adopting a serious hands-on approach to HIV/AIDS. By promoting a spirit of volunteerism, they are joining forces with the 46664 Volunteer Campaign for World AIDS Day to mobilise their employees, members and customers to volunteer their time to an HIV/AIDS related project.

Nelson Mandela's life has reflected a deep and lasting commitment to protect the rights of all people irrespective of race, religion, gender or personal circumstance. As South Africans, his legacy rests within each and every one of us to carry this mission forward in meaningful ways. The 46664 Volunteer Campaign for World AIDS Day provides a unique opportunity to follow his footsteps.
With an estimated 5.6 million South Africans HIV-positive (2003), the AIDS pandemic is the biggest humanitarian crisis South Africa has ever seen. The 46664 Volunteer Campaign for World Aids Day is an excellent example of how individuals can pledge their support through action - without reaching deeply into their pockets. It encourages people to get involved and help their neighbours in need.
John Samuel, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation; NMF Board Trustees, Tokyo Sexwale and Irene Menell; and Dr Olive Shisana, Chairperson of the NMF AIDS Advisory, called upon all South Africans to join in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
"46664 represents the coming together of our young nation in what is perhaps our greatest challenge to date. 46664 will not only address the needs of people affected by HIV/AIDS but will imbue a sense of national solidarity," says Samuel.
