"The idea was borne from the need to give consumers a firsthand experience of the dynamics of this vital industry," explains Johan Ehlers, CEO of Agri-Expo that organises the event in coordination with prominent dairy role players such as the Milk Producers' Organisation, breeders' societies and suppliers to the industry.
"The dairy industry makes a significant contribution to the economy of the Western Cape, also in terms of job creation," adds Philip Blanckenberg, chairperson of the Milk Producers' Organisation of the province. "Just more than 680 dairy producers serve as the backbone of the dairy industry in the Western Cape - the country's number one province in terms of milk production and one of the few agricultural industries that grows consistently. It also provides jobs to around 37 000 people. We really want to link consumers with the various role players in an exciting and entertaining way that engages both young and old."
The show will allow visitors to relive the excitement of an animal show with world class animals being paraded in the show ring, the crowning of breed champions and more in a fun-filled atmosphere. "Friday's focus is on what is relevant and important to the dairy producer, while everyone that loves ice cream, milk, butter, cheese or yoghurt is invited to join us on Saturday," says Ehlers.
On Friday, dairy farmers are invited for an extensive heifer show, feeder wagon demonstrations, as well as the announcement of the Western Cape Master Dairyman of the Year. On Saturday from 10am-6pm it is time to see how approximately 200 cows are showed, bring the kids for an interactive milking demo and try your hand at the art of making cheese. Youth shows, interbreed championships, dog jumping and tractor shows, as well as an ice cream eating competition are some of the highlights to be expected.
Agri-Expo is also the organiser of the successful SA Cheese Festival that celebrates 10 years of cheese from 29 April to 2 May 2011.
