Sešego Cares gets ready for winter

Sešego Cares, a charitable arm of Absa, has launched its annual winter drive, the 'Wool Project' which collects wool donations from Absa staff members and supporters and gives them to a group of retired women at Roosevelt Park's Rose Village in Northcliff to produce high quality winter garments for distribution among charities that care for the needy.

The retirees have already begun knitting scarves, beanies, blankets, gloves and jerseys. They are also determined to beat the winter deadline in order to deliver much needed warm clothing for the poverty-stricken population of the province, who would otherwise suffer from exposure to the cold.

Last year, more than 1000 beneficiaries, ranging from disabled children to Aids-orphans and the elderly, benefited from the project which reached every corner of the province - including Hammanskraal, Soweto, Eldorado, Greymont, Krugersdorp Alexandra, Alberton and the greater East Rand.

With more than 400 items already being collected from the senior citizens of Roosevelt Park, Sešego Cares aims to increase its reach to a further 2000 in Gauteng this coming winter.

"On behalf of the beneficiaries of this project, I would like to thank the volunteers for their incredible work, passion and kindness. I am always amazed by the swiftness at which they produce these garments and the love, creativity and care that has gone into making each garment is clearly evident," says Annemarie Mostert, national coordinator of Sešego Cares.

Mostert, who has been head of protocol and public relations for the financial services group for 15 years, has stepped down to pursue a career outside of the industry but she will continue her involvement with Sešego Cares, having been involved on a voluntary basis with the non-profit for seven years. She will stay on as national co-ordinator on a pro-bono basis.

"Special thanks must also be extended to all who donated the wool," she concludes.

Contact the nearest Absa branch for any donations towards the project.
