Regeneration project comes to Khayelitsha

Grand-Pa will launch its Regeneration Project in Khayelitsha in the Western Cape on 4 July 2009. The project will give individuals within the community the chance to earn an income through recycling, as well as contribute to the upgrading a communal property of their choice.

The Khayelitsha leg is the fifth in a series of launches in pre-selected areas - Katlehong, Tlhabane, Pienaar, Seshego, Khayelitsha and Kwa Mashu - aimed at empowering communities to regenerate areas that impact on their daily lives - clinics, community halls, parks - by collecting a predetermined amount of recyclable material.

The launch of the Regeneration Project in the Western Cape township will involve live music and the people will be encouraged to collect a bag of litter. They will receive a T-shirt and boerewors roll for their efforts.

The project is positioned to affect real change within Khayelitsha.

In the two weeks leading up to the launch, participants have received training about the different recyclable materials (plastic, paper and cans) and what they can expect to be paid for the various items. They were also shown how to estimate weight.

“In addition to positively impacting on the environment, the initiative will touch the lives of thousands of people and be sustainable long after the initial three-month launch phase," says group product manager for Grand-Pa, Monique Burger.

“Targets have been set for each participating community. Once these targets have been achieved, Grand-Pa will fund the upgrading of a communal property chosen by that particular community,” she concludes.
