New winemakers in Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal

Graham Beck Wines has appointed Pieter Ferreira as winemaker for its still wines and Méthode Cap Classique.

Ferreira's first harvests were with Rust en Vrede and Chateau de Panery in the Rhône Valley in 2004; followed by Haskell Vineyards, Ernie Els and Duckhorn Vineyards in Napa Valley in 2005 and finally Zevenwacht Wines later the same year, where he remained until his current appointment. His appointment completes a three-strong team that includes cellarmaster Pieter Ferreira and the estate's Franschhoek winemaker Erika Obermeyer.

The Stables Wine Estate, a KwaZulu-Natal wine producer, has promoted Tiny van Niekerk from winemaker to cellarmaster and appointed Tremayne Smith as the new winemaker to join viticulturist, Daniel Markl. Smith qualified in 2007 and worked as a harvest intern at De Trafford, joining Malagas Wine as the assistant winemaker and vineyard manager before setting off for France to work in small winery in Felluns, near the Spanish border.
