Woolies to expand FoodForward SA partnership over festive period

Woolworths will be expanding its partnership with food redistribution organisation FoodForward SA over the festive period, this year.

Customers will have the opportunity to donate to this cause until 31 December 2019. For every swipe of the linked MySchool/MyPlanet/MyVillage card, Woolworths will contribute to FoodForward SA.

This is in addition to the donations that are usually made to customers’ preferred MySchool/MyPlanet/MyVillage beneficiaries. Moreover, if customers pay with their Financial Services card, the donation will be doubled.

Alleviating hunger

“Giving back has always been at the heart of a Woolworths Christmas, and we are passionate about alleviating hunger in South Africa – it’s a journey we have been on for the past 16 years,” says Zinzi Mgolodela, Woolworths director of corporate affairs.

“Some of the initiatives we’ve championed with our valued partners include helping schools grow food gardens, helping children meet their nutritional needs, equipping emerging farmers with skills to grow food and helping distribute surplus food. But for Christmas 2019 we’d like to do even more,” she adds.

Retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers and farmers partner with FoodForward SA to recover edible surplus food and distribute it responsibly, to provide greater access to food for vulnerable groups across the country. FoodForward SA currently distributes to 530 beneficiary organisations, ensuring that 201,000 vulnerable South Africans receive a meal every day.

If customers would like to make an even greater difference, there are other ways to donate too.

A cause-related reusable shopping bag will be available for purchase at selected stores or online – each sale equals R10 (VAT inclusive) – that will be donated to FoodForward SA. Customers will also be able to purchase a donation card at the tills in selected stores or online, enabling further support for those in need.

The entire initiative will contribute to Woolworths’ broader #ZeroHunger campaign, which aims to raise R4.5m in the fight against hunger.
