Second Hetzner data centre in Mother City

Specialist web hosting service provider Hetzner has opened a new data centre in Cape Town as a result of growing customer demand. This latest facility brings Hetzner's total number of data centres to three, representing a 120% increase in the company's cabinet capacity.

Hans Wencke, MD of Hetzner, says that the company's latest data centre was designed according to comprehensive engineering standards and connects directly to Verizon Business' national and international network backbone.

"We have reached capacity in our first Cape Town data centre. The opening of our second data centre in Cape Town reflects Hetzner's commitment to invest in our customers' growth and further extends our market leadership position well into the future."

As with Hetzner's two previous data centres, this latest facility has been developed according to strict standards and includes the following features:

  • Full, 100MBit fibre connection with a second redundant fibre connection to cater for the unlikely event that a cable is compromised
  • Air-conditioning banks to sufficiently cool the internal environment with additional redundancy should a unit fail
  • Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with a stand-by time of two hours, as well as a diesel power generator, in case of a power outage
  • Fire detection system with automated PyroShield fire suppression
  • 24-hour security and monitoring facilities (video surveillance, biometric access) with the main entrance manned 24/7 by security guards
  • Both the UPS and servers are monitored 24/7/365 with notification by email and SMS to more than one support staff member

"With the opening of our third data centre we will continue to capitalise on the fully managed and co-location market - a strategy that has already proved successful with our data centre in Johannesburg, which opened in August last year," adds Wencke.

Hetzner's second data centre situated in Gallo Manor, Johannesburg, has experienced significant growth, reaching 70% capacity since it opened.

"Driven by the proliferation of IP-based applications such as VoIP as well as content-rich web sites and businesses exchanging large amounts of data, the growth rate for Hetzner's co-location services has doubled in 2006, and is expected to experience continued growth into 2007," concludes Wencke.
