When it comes to Madiba, "words are just not enough"
In honour of Madiba's birthday today, Monday, 18 July 2011, Judd Quy, creative director (Johannesburg) of specialist design and advertising agency Brand inc Create, decided to create a fun project using words to sculpt and build the face of former South African president Nelson Mandela.
"Brand inc Create [has] the capacity to unravel the most conservative or older, more familiar design pieces and turn them into something fresh whilst never losing the brand's essence that got it to be where it is today. The same is for Madiba - a face recognised globally - his generous and warm smile, gentle eyes and overall expression of peace - makes every photo Madiba is captured in a piece of artwork in itself!
"I wanted to take this and create an 'illustration' in honour of the man the world loves over. And strangely, because I work with pictures and not words, the line, 'Words are just not enough' - a contradiction in itself - became very apt when I used words to sculpt and build his face.
"The creative thought and words used is what I feel makes Madiba, well, Madiba. From a designer's viewpoint, it's different but doesn't lose sight of the main idea - a birthday wish from a creative hub, in celebration of the most loved man on his 93rd birthday!"
