Saatchi & Saatchi win Cannes Media Lion

Saatchi & Saatchi has won a coveted Media Lion for Best use of Television after South Africa failed to win any prizes in this section last year.

Saatchi & Saatchi won the award for its client Osram. During a broadcast of the rugby programme, Boots & All presented by Darren Scott and Naas Botha, the lights flickers and went out. The message was that it wouldn't have happened with Osram lamps.

The following made it onto the shortlist:

  • TBWA Hunt Lascaris for Wonderbra and Spray & Cook;
  • Saatchi & Saatchi for Bostik, Peter Gird Productions, SA Blood Transfusion Services;
  • Jupiter Drawing Room for Nike and Nedbank.

Gordon Muller represented South Africa on the judging panel. The judges emphasised that they were looking for ads that were demonstrably effective, engaging and had "great consumer insight" - performance and results were important.
