A shipping company in George is looking for an operations manager.
Summary:
The operations manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the daily operations of the shipping and containers department. This role includes ensuring efficient and effective processes for the handling, storage, and transportation of goods, maintaining compliance with all relevant regulations, and optimising operational performance.
Key responsibilities:
Operations management
- Oversee daily shipping and container operations to ensure efficiency and effectiveness
- Develop and implement operational policies and procedures
- Manage the loading and unloading of containers, ensuring timely and accurate delivery
- Coordinate with logistics and supply chain teams to optimise shipping routes and schedules
- Lead, mentor, and develop the operations team, including hiring, training, and performance management
- Foster a positive and productive work environment
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations
- Implement and maintain safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment
- Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure compliance and operational standards
- Monitor and analyse key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify areas for improvement
- Implement corrective actions to address performance gaps
- Prepare and present regular operational reports to senior management
- Manage relationships with customers and suppliers to ensure high levels of service
- Address and resolve any operational issues or customer complaints promptly and effectively
- Develop and manage the operations budget
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and implement cost-control measures
- Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in shipping and container technology
- Implement new technologies and innovative solutions to improve operational efficiency
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in logistics, supply chain management, business administration, or a related field
- Minimum of five years of experience in operations management within the shipping and containers industry
- Proven experience in managing teams and driving operational improvements
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Proficiency in logistics and supply chain management software
- Strong understanding of safety and regulatory compliance
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- This role may require working outside of regular business hours to address operational issues as needed
- Occasional travel may be required to oversee operations at different sites or to meet with clients and suppliers
