Interns help craft October 2011 issue of teen magazine

Behind the scenes of the October 2011 issue of seventeen magazine - out now - 16 interns and one reader helped write articles, organise style fashion and beauty shoots and create layouts, as part of the 17 Academy project.

In June 2011, 16 teen girls were selected to join the 17 Academy project, a three-week internship programme to train them on how a magazine is put together. Nandipha Phantsi, the lucky reader, was able to guest edit the issue alongside former editor Khwezi Magwaza.

"Doing my internship here has not only taught me how to write features, but also taught me about fashion, design and using social media for research. Watching my feature develop from an idea to an actual magazine layout was fantastic but watching me develop, as a future magazine journalist is a one in a million experience." says Phantsi.

Janine Jellars, newly appointed editor of the magazine, says, "The 17 Academy gives a variety of girls in South Africa an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in what it takes to put their favourite magazine together."
