First Jet Club Community Awards

Four projects aimed at improving the lives of others in their communities were winners of R30 000 each in the first annual Jet Club Community Awards. The award ceremony took place in Johannesburg on Wednesday, November 5, 2003 at The Castle, Kyalami.

The winners have one thing in common - they are all unrecognised leaders who were nominated by their communities.

The four winners are:-

  • The Umfunti Old Age Association based in Swaziland who won the "We Care" category for the assistance and work they do with vulnerable children, the elderly, hospice and health services.
  • The Swaziland Action Group Against Abuse (SWAGAA) also based in Swaziland won the "We Will Overcome" category for the work and back-up services they offer for substance abuse, gang violence and abuse of women and children.
  • The Wool and Craft Project based in Noupoort won the "Vukuzenzela" category for making a difference in the fields of entrepreneurship, youth development and adult work centres.
  • Mr. Bongani Mbatha of the Madadeni district won the "Education" category for his extreme focus and work in "education with a difference".

Ms Nelly Mosiane, the CSR director of Edcon handed out a surprise Highly Commended prize of R10 000, to the Makgoba Environmental Club for their inspiring work.

Mr Assie Boshoff, Jet CE says, "Our aim was to celebrate people doing good deeds and to reward them. We wanted to offer recognition with a token financial reward to an organisation, project or programme that is promoting social justice and equity, and fighting poverty and prejudice. In this, the first year of these Awards, we have truly succeeded in finding worthy recipients."

Nominations were received from all countries where Jet Club has stores and over a million members, which are South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland.
