TomTom sparks a fitness revolution

Last week Thursday saw the launch of the all-new TomTom Spark GPS Fitness Watch at the ultra swanky Zenith Sky Bar in Cape Town. Utilising everybody's favourite fitness motivator, music, The TomTom Spark's integrated music player enables fitness enthusiasts to train to the rhythm of over 500 songs without the use of a smartphone (or any pesky wires).

3GB of music storage on the TomTom Spark means users can leave their smartphone at home while listening to music directly from their watch. Streaming music to a wide range of Bluetooth headphones, the fitness watch comes preloaded with a bespoke thirty minute mix of motivating, high energy, upbeat dance anthems from some of the world’s best DJs, but music snobs need not fear as there's also the option of downloading your own curated playlists from iTunes or Windows Media Player.

More than music

But there's more to the TomTomSpark than sweet beats. Steps, active minutes, distance, calories burned and sleep duration can all be monitored using the 24/7 activity tracking feature. Users can set and track daily and weekly fitness goals and follow progress on their watch or via the TomTom MySports app. The built-in heart rate monitor accurately tracks heart rate, without the need for a chest strap. The multi-sport mode means that users can track all of their indoor and outdoor sporting activity including running, cycling, swimming, treadmill and gym workouts.

The new TomTom Spark is targeted at fitness fundis - brand ambassadors include that of motorcross veteran Nick de Wit and Comrades 2015 winner Gift Kulele - and exercise noobs alike. The new watches are available in two strap sizes: the large straps being longer and wider, and the smaller version shorter and slimmer - good news for those like me who bear the brunt of tiny wrists and are seemingly never catered for.

TomTom Spark also includes highly accurate GPS tracking to provide real-time information including time, distance, speed and pace. Users can upload their stats via the MySports app and review their stats wirelessly on multiple platforms including TomTom MySports, RunKeeper, Nike+ and more. Additional features include smartphone notifications, audio performance feedback and water resistance up to 40m/5ATM depending on the conditions.

“We know that music plays an important role when it comes to motivating and improving sports performance, but relying on a smartphone is all too often an uncomfortable experience,” says Corinne Vigreux, managing director, TomTom. “The unique combination of an integrated music player, built-in heart rate monitor, 24/7 activity tracking, multi-sport modes and GPS in TomTom Spark makes it easier than ever to track progress, improve overall fitness levels and ultimately get more from your workout.”
