e-Learning for engineers

Lifelong Learning Solutions (LLLS), a subsidiary of E-doc, which broadcasts the Medical Network, will launch the Engineering and Construction Channel (ECTV) in February next year, with the South African Association of Consulting Engineers (SAACE) as the first content provider.

E-doc is multimedia broadcast and e-learning company established to meet the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements of the healthcare sector. It began with veterinary training programmes and has since expanded to serve the needs of doctors, dentists, medical technologists and related fields and now has a total of 12 000 registered healthcare professionals.

Johan Gerber, founder of E-Doc, observed, "With E-Doc now well established, our newest subsidiary, LLLS, will utilise all the existing and proven technology to bring a uniquely-niched channel to the engineering and built environment professions."

The Engineering Council of South Africa has gazetted that CPD training will be compulsory for engineering professionals from January 2006.

According to Gerber, "The product will enable e-learners to view training material, news and discussion programmes via DSTV satellite, participate in CPD tests to verify participation either by cellular phone or via the Website, receive online certification of credits earned and manage and record their CPD points online under an individual password-protected profile."

ECTV will be a multimedia pay-to-view information and learning resource, and possibly the most affordable medium of training available to companies. Long-term, the only limitation to the number of programmes broadcast per month will be the number of content providers, advertisers and e-learners coming on board.
