SASKO takes Siyasizana Daycare Project to Western Cape

Based on the successfully launch of the SASKO Siyasizana Daycare Project in Thembisa in 2015, the programme has now been rolled out in the Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha communities of Cape Town.

The launch, held on Wednesday, 24 August, hosted more than 600 daycare owners at the Oliver Tambo Community Hall and Recreation Centre in Khayelitsha.

The project incentivises daycare owners for collecting empty SASKO Bread bags. The Siyasizana Daycare Project was conceptualised to give back to communities and raise awareness of waste reduction and recycling. Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha were identified for the campaign because of the quantity of daycares and the opportunity for SAASKO to actively engage with the community.

Bags redeemed for basic amenities

Lungelwa Mnyamana, brand manager of SASKO Bread, explains, “Siyasizana means we are helping each other. We chose this name because it resonates with our daily partnership with many homes in South Africa. Every day, we deliver bread into these communities, so it made sense for us to build on this relationship and be part of the solution to some of their daily needs. The bags they gather will be redeemed for basic amenities for their daycares like backpacks, basins, carpets, fridges, stoves and other necessities depending on the amount of bags collected, and will assist daycare owners in making the environment more comfortable for the children.”

“After the success of the launch in Thembisa which exceeded our expectations with 364 daycares participating, 315,582 SASKO bread bags being collected and 1,385 prizes being handed to creches after only six months, we could not wait to roll out in the Western Cape. As a proudly South African company, we are all about ‘ubuntu’ and want to give back wherever we can. We have big plans to grow this campaign across South Africa and are currently identifying our next area,” said Mnyamana.

In early 2017, SASKO will host a prize-giving for all participating daycares in Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha.
