Cinman explains that he’s a committee member of the Loeries, representing the IAB – in other words digital – within Loeries. That means he’s involved in selecting the digital judging panel, defining the digital categories and ensuring digital has a strong showing on the weekend. Here’s what he gets up to in Joburg and Cape Town, when he’s not in Durban for all things Loeries® Creative Week™-related…
Cinman: I live in Joburg (in Craighall Park, if you must know), I work in Sandton and Woodstock in Cape Town; and I don’t play, I work.
Cinman: I don’t claim fame. That would be immodest.
Cinman: I built a bunch of websites; then I managed people who built a lot more websites; now I manage people who have made me realise that websites were only the beginning of a much bigger story.
Cinman: Whisky. Cocaine. Far Cry. My girlfriend. Breaking Bad. Ritual satanic abuse. At least three of these are true.
Cinman: If you play your cards right you get to have a lot of freedom, and live a good life. At best, clients trust us to do things they aren’t brave enough to do themselves, and that can sometimes let you change the world.
Cinman: There isn’t an average. I hate averages. Averages are for people who are scared of extremes.
Cinman: Mostly meeting room chairs.
Cinman: Lots of people – I wouldn’t want to pick favourites. Our industry is actually full of really smart, committed and passionate people. I am constantly surprised by the calibre of people I meet.
Cinman: Most of the most interesting things cannot be published. I’m working on an album, that’s quite interesting.
Cinman: You know what I hate? People who say “Can you talk to that” when referring to a concept or idea. Why not “Can you talk about that?” Can you talk to an idea? I don’t know. I’ve never tried. But I suspect if you do talk to an idea, it’ll probably not respond.
Cinman: Often mid-sentence – it’s strange. I mull over things for ages and then as I’m discussing them the right idea pops into my brain.
Cinman: I have few secrets left, and none of them are tricks. I can play the guitar – but I think most people know that.
Cinman: Depends on which app you’re scrolling through. Let’s assume it’s the weather app. You’ll find Joburg, Cape Town, Zanzibar, Turkey and Kansas City.
Cinman: Trust me, newbies do not need my advice to get into my part of the industry. Fortunately for them there is such demand for new skills that they’ll be just fine.
