‘Jabulani’ - celebrating freedom

To celebrate the 10 years of democracy in South Africa, as well as freedom of broadcast, ABC Ulwazi has once again come up with an innovative idea to involve community radio stations from around the country. 'Jabulani: Celebrating Freedom', with support from the European Union, called upon all community radio volunteers, producers and journalists to write up stories celebrating freedom and democracy in their own communities.

The 20 best stories have been chosen and workshopped (through hands on production training) into 10-minute dramas' that portray an individual and personal experience of 10 years of democracy.

These dramas will be broadcast on June 16th on local community radio stations throughout the day. Each station will be in telephonic contact with the next in line and will discuss the story and personal experiences of democracy through the airwaves. Thus each station will pass their stories onto the next. In the same way that the Olympic torch is passed, the flame of freedom and democracy will be passed between community radio stations on June 16th.
