Satellite offers radio a sporting chance

Sports Information Radio (SIR), a satellite based radio station run by the Sports Guild is readying itself to begin broadcasting this year. The station's mission is to be a vital and necessary part of the life of all sports persons, identifying and servicing the needs of members and sponsors by providing an innovative and informative platform for free expression, irrespective of the sporting codes.

"SIR will be broadcast through the DSTV Audio bouquet, on single as well as duel view decoders, enabling listeners to watch a match and keep themselves up-to-date and informed of the rules and regulations regarding the game," says station founder Alan Munro. "The station is being positioned as a vehicle to assist sports persons in acquiring sponsorships, as well as for the promotion of sportsmanship from participant's and spectator's through to achieving greater involvement across the board on and off the field."

Munro explained that the stations 24-hour format will be 50/50 Music/Talk with the music primarily hits of the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, while the talk will revolve around all sporting codes, with input from respected sport personalities and fans. While remaining informative, interesting, entertaining, receptive and objective at all times. All shows will carry up-to-the-minute news and scores of major live sporting events from across the world.

According to research done by the station, sports broadcasting within Southern Africa indicates airtime given to sport is on average 10 percent. With only radio 2000 providing live sport coverage, on a ball-by-ball or blow-by-blow method.
