Social media embraced by Internet users

South Africans have embraced social media, with MXit and Facebook leading the way in terms of the number of users, but Twitter and BlackBerry Messenger show dramatic growth in the second half of 2011, according to The New Age.

It quotes the latest findings of a study by Fuseware and World Wide Worx entitled "South African Social Media Landscape 2011".

The research shows there are now 1,1-million Twitter users in South Africa, an increase of more than twenty-fold in just over a year.

MXit remains the most popular social network with about 10-million active users and, contrary to popular belief, it is not dominated by teenagers. The study shows that 76% of male users and 73% of females are aged 18 or older.

In terms of Facebook, of the 4,2-million users in South Africa in August 2011, only 3,2-million had visited the site this year. The study found that more teenagers were now using BlackBerry Messenger rather than Facebook.
