Former deputy police commissioner arrested for fraud

The 57-year-old, who retired from the South African Police Service (SAPS) in 2010 and was responsible for the Supply Chain Management Division at the SAPS' national Head Office in Pretoria, appeared in court on Tuesday on charges of fraud.

He is accused of accepting bribes worth R52,000 in kickbacks from a service provider of the SAPS during his term of office.

"From 2008 to 2009, the money was allegedly paid for family leisure trips, university and school fees," Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said.

Ramaloko said Hlela appeared at the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, charged with four counts of corruption.

The case has been postponed until 27 June. He was released on warning.
