Auditors told to sweep corruption under the carpet
Auditors have allegedly been intimidated and forced to cover-up evidence of corruption in municipalities according to a report in Business Report over the weekend.
The allegations come from Claudelle von Eck, the chief executive of the Internal Audit Association of South Africa. She says that while the association was powerless to intervene it had received reports from its members of intimidation by council officials, according to Business Report.
She says that internal auditors are meant to be the "whistle-blowers against corruption" but were being prevented from doing so because of threats against them.
Last week, Auditor-General Terence Nombembe confirmed that just five percent, or 13, of the 343 local councils in South Africa had received a clean audit from the Auditor-General's office, says Business Report.
