Recognising Mama Afrika
This comes after Clover received four top PRISM awards earlier this year, with the Mama Afrika project receiving the Community Relations gold trophy.
In addition, Clover's Dr Elain Vlok and the four Mama Afrikas: Linah Maluleke (Soweto), Gabisile Khoza (Tembisa), Bahle Ncgobo (Umlazi), and Rosie Mashale (Khayalitsha), are all Shoprite Checkers/ SABC2 Woman of the Year nominees in the social welfare category. They were singled out from top quality nominations from across South Africa, for their dedication to community building. The category finalists will be announced on 24 June 2005.
Dr Vlok is one of the finalists in the corporate and social responsibility category of the Business Women of the Year awards. She has been recognised for her passion and commitment to community upliftment and for the success she has achieved with the Mama Afrika project, which she has spearheaded since inception last year. The Business Woman of the Year will be announced on 30 June 2005.
The Mama Afrika project is an ongoing Clover initiative, aimed at assisting and supporting communities in a sustainable way, by helping people to help themselves. The four Mama Afrikas have been integral to the success of the project, as Clover has relied on them to identify the needs of their people. Community assistance to date has included funding, skills training and job creation.
