Through its solar water heater rebate programme, Eskom subsidises the purchase of solar water heaters, the extent of which will reduce year on year from 2011. Discounts vary according to the system installed and only selected systems are available at Builders Warehouse. Eskom now has 93 accredited suppliers, 149 registered distributors and 37 registered independent installers on the programme compared to 10 suppliers when the programme started in 2007.
Consumers converting to sun-powered water heating can save on their monthly electricity bill, help free-up capacity on our power supply and contribute to the global drive towards cleaner energy. Eskom is actively encouraging homeowners to make the switch to solar water heating because it is a viable, sustainable and cleaner alternative to electricity and as rebates will decrease from next year.
"The stores make it easier for homeowners to access solar information and advice on systems and installers. People simply have to pop into their nearest outlet. By making it this easy, we extend the reach of Eskom's programme. Promoting the use of sustainable resources is important if South Africa is to reach its energy savings targets and reduce the dependence on traditional heating methods," says Tracy Allen, strategic business manager at Builders Warehouse.
To qualify for a rebate, consumers must purchase an Eskom approved system and an accredited installer must fit it. Installers registered on the programme will assist homeowners with their rebate claim. Homeowners fill out a rebate form following the installation of an approved solar water heating system by an accredited installer. Forms are sent to the auditors, Deloitte, within six months of the installation and rebates are paid directly into consumers bank accounts within eight weeks.
