Clicks' MD, Michael Harvey, said that the trend in health care has moved towards the pharmacy playing a larger role in primary health care, in support of the Department of Health's vision of making health care more affordable and accessible to all.

"We are pleased that Clicks Gardens can now meet the extended needs of its local community, who can enjoy the convenience of pharmacy care on their doorstep," he said.

Largest retail pharmacy chain

Harvey said that the Clicks pharmacy chain has expanded rapidly. After opening the first corporate retail pharmacy in Sea Point in March 2004, Clicks has grown into the country's largest retail pharmacy chain. The 100th in-store dispensary was opened in July 2006 and the 200th in Constantia Village last July.

"The pharmacy model adopted by Clicks has been proven internationally by large retailers such as Boots in the UK, Walgreens and CVS in the USA, and Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada. The dispensary is a mechanism to attract customers into our stores and this increases front-shop sales and over-the-counter medicine volumes," he said.
