Worldwide favourite, Ouma Rusks adds new flavours

In finding out what South Africans miss most when they are away, a survey among 70 000 ex-pat South Africans, released by SA Hotels in April this year, revealed that South Africans living in London not only miss their families but South African food including biltong, droewors, boerewors, chutney and Ouma Rusks.

Two new flavours to make ex-pats feel even more homesick are Poppy Seed & Blueberry and Oat, Raisin & Apple.

The iconic brand originated in 1939, during the great Depression, in the northeastern Cape town of Molteno. Ouma Greyvenstein and her friends attended a church meeting to discuss ways in which to further mission work. At the close of the meeting, each woman was given a half-crown coin and told to multiply it, using her God-given talents.

Ouma Greyvenstein decided to use the money to buy ingredients for a much loved family recipe for rusks. Her homemade rusks proved so popular that orders continued to flow in... and the rest is history. Today, they are still baked on Farm Friedenheim in Molteno, the original home of Ouma Greyvenstein and remain the South African market category leader.
