New faces, new stories
Angela van Schalkwyk, founder and editor-in-chief of Screen Africa (magazine, directory, website and newsletter) and its predecessor, Southern Screen & Stage, left on 28 February 2011, having sold her company Sun Circle Publishers to Simon Robinson.
At the end of June 2011, her term as a director and shareholder ends and Robinson takes over full ownership of the company. Her position as editor-in-chief has been taken over by Joanna Sterkowicz, who was deputy editor for many years.
She was instrumental in many first for the South African film industry - Sithengi, the Southern African & International Television Market, distributing the magazine at international television festivals and film markets, including the Cannes International Film Festival in 1993, identifying the two annual MIP markets which take place in Cannes, as new opportunities for South Africans to sell and negotiate programme deals internationally, organising a South African exhibition stand at both MIP markets for four years, until the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) took over the function of promoting the South African industry at international events.
In the mid 1990s, it initiated a special feature dedicated to the international projects of the commercials facilitating service companies at Cannes Lions, where it not only distributed the magazine but van Schalkwyk also attended, becoming an annual Screen Africa project. Van Schalkwyk leaves to explore new creative challenges, not retire.
