Shaik trial: independent groups launch new bid to broadcast proceedings
Talk Radio 702 and 567 CapeTalk have requested permission to broadcast the trial on radio "on a live, delayed or edited basis".
702's Station Manager Yusuf Abramjee said: "We believe that the request for audio will not be intrusive and will in no way intimidate those taking part in court proceedings. We will submit that it is in the interest of openness and transparency to have the highlights of the trial broadcast on radio."
567 CapeTalk Station Manager, Colleen Louw, said; "We fully support all efforts to ensure media freedom in the country."
94.7 Highveld Stereo and Kfm are supporting the application.
e.tv have requested permission to record an audio feed of the trial which it would broadcast during its news bulletins and special reports on the proceedings. e.tv's application to televise the proceedings of the Shaik trial was refused last week.
e.tv Channel Director Bronwyn Keene-Young said: "We believe that an audio broadcast of the trial will address the concerns raised by the court when it refused our previous application."
The three independent media organisations are hoping the matter will be heard next week.
