ABC Jan - June 2004 highlights

The Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) had released the highlights of the ABCs latest circulation figures for the period January to June 2004. Urban Dailies show a 19% growth since 2001 and 14% growth on the same period 2003, while urban weeklies are up 21% and 58% on the same periods.

Verified Free Distribution (VFD) have shown explosive growth of 65% since 2001 and 11% year on year - this is reflected in an increase in gross advertising investment in this category since 2001.

Gross advertising investment in print is up 58% (year ending June 2001 to June 2004) whilst over the same period print's share of voice has declined 1%.These figures exclude classified, staff vacancies, property advertising which accounts for a major portion of the newspaper income.

Other highlights include:

-- Cinema advertising up 2.9% year on year.

-- Net sales in the magazine field are up 24% since 2001 and 13% since last year. Within the magazines field there is evidence of a move towards more focused titles, with youth and leisure gaining strength.

The ABC says that 10 years into the rainbow nations democracy and in the third year of the new century, these figures show a healthy and vibrant free press.
