Zuma suing Highveld for alleged defamation
Johannesburg radio station, 94.7 Highveld Stereo, confirmed in a media statement yesterday, Tuesday, 4 July 2006, that a number of its employees and its holding company have been served with letters of demand by Jacob Zuma's attorneys for alleged defamation. According to regulatory affairs manager for Primedia Broadcasting, Khahliso Mochaba, six letters of demand were delivered to Primedia Place, demanding a total of R40 million in damages in response to the Rude Awakening show airing a parody song.
Says CEO of Primedia Broadcasting, Terry Volkwyn, "94.7 Highveld Stereo will be defending the action and we are in the process of briefing our legal team. We have nothing more to say at this stage."
Zuma is demanding damages from Primedia Limited (R7 million), station manager Ravi Naidoo (R7 million), and members of the Rude Awakening team: Jeremy Mansfield (R5 million), Samantha Cowen (R7 million), Darren Simpson (R7 million) and Paul Rotherham (R7 million).
