We are looking for a creative, talented, and diligent individual who thrives on editorial content and has a keen sense for business development to join our team. The type of person who is utterly reliable, a troubleshooter, and an editorial backstop. Someone who knows their its from it's, but can equally focus on multiple small editorial parts, and, like a conductor, bring a team effort together into a symphony. 

If you are someone who gets a thrill from polishing copy to perfection, can write a punchy headline, has a deep curiosity about Joburg, a journalistic sense for content, and takes great pride in your work, we would love to meet you.

The role includes, but is not limited to: assisting with managing a small online content team to create, edit, format, and publish digital content that focuses on city, lifestyle, culture, and events.

The ideal candidate must have experience working across multiple digital platforms, including a website, a newsletter, and various social media. You must be based in Johannesburg. The role is full-time but hybrid, where you'll work from a designated office twice a week in Rosebank and surrounds.

The successful candidate has a collaborative working style, is a troubleshooter, is deadline-driven, has an exceptional eye for detail, a keen news sense, and a commitment to accuracy.

Prerequisites: A car and a valid drivers licence, a laptop and access to uninterrupted Wi-Fi.

Your responsibilities will include:

Editorial support to editor 
  • Oversee the production of the weekly newsletter and website content
  • Manage a content diary and a daily team meeting to ensure outcomes are met
  • Oversee client contracts in terms of the scope of work and deliverables to the clients.
Social media 
  • Oversee the weekly social media production
  • Respond to engagement on social media channels and create/post occasional content
CRM
  • Assist with ensuring client campaign objectives are met, and liaise with clients promptly and professionally
Content 
  • Edit and polish articles to ensure accuracy and a consistent editorial voice
  • Plan content schedules and ideas for original thematic content
  • Strong writing skills 
Generate weekly content ideas befitting “the intelligent guide to Joburg”, editorial planning and editing
  • Publish content according to a weekly schedule
  • Format articles and images for online publication
  • Write content when required.
  • Identify content ideas based on website trends.
Organisational/planning skills/time management 
  • Monday.com to be used effectively for managing the weekly and monthly diary.
  • Manage content and team inputs, and deliver to deadlines.
Traffic control 
  • Timeously publish content to multiple digital platforms – website, newsletter, social media.
  • Oversee Johannesburg In Your Pocket’s main email account

People management and leadership
  • Assist with managing freelance and in-house writers
Represent the brand
  • Attend events for Johannesburg in your Pocket, from diving into cultural experiences to restaurants and hotel visits
Additional/supporting role
  • Assist with business development opportunities
Skill required
  • Excellent writing ability and editing know-how
  • Project management experience
  • Working knowledge of Monday.com, Meta, Google Suite and Google
  • Analytics, Dropbox, Later, Canva, Mailchimp – or similar
  • Excellent communication skills in English – written and spoken
  • Noted leadership and team management skills
  • Understanding of social media platforms
  • Determined adherence to deadlines
  • Interest in online community-building
  • Excellent visual sense and photography know-how
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • A nose for business development
