IT helped delegates connect at ANC Conference in South Africa

The ANC conference at Polokwane, South Africa, saw President Thabo Mbeki soundly rejected as party president and Jacob Zuma overwhelmingly accepted. But to ensure the process went smoothly, meant top-class communications, IT back-up and infrastructure were crucial.

Management at Sahara Computers, a local supplier of Information, Communication and Digital Lifestyle technology to the SA government, sponsored infrastructure to ensure reliable connectivity for an Internet Café that was used by delegates at the 52nd ANC Conference.

The African National Congress party conference involved the participation of about 4000 delegates and Internet connectivity and digital resources were identified as a priority by organisers. Sahara set up and fully equipped an onsite Internet Café.

The digital resource and information centre incorporated Wi-fi and wireless technology, access points with full connectivity, Internet and e-mail.

"Technology plays a very important role in conferences of this magnitude, taking place at this level. Connectivity is imperative to facilitate real-time communication, which can make a meaningful difference," says Gary Naidoo, deputy MD at Sahara.
