Entrepreneurs in the US hope to create batteries from organic waste which can be used by people living in countries with poor electricity supplies. The firm which calls itself Lebone Solutions is financed by a 200,000 US dollar grant from the World Bank.
It is developing a battery which can generate enough energy to power a household lamp or cell phone from waste materials such as soil and manure. The group is made up of former classmates from Harvard University has carried out field research in Tanzania.
Developers hope households will be able to build a one-off battery for less than 15 US dollars when the technology develops.
