Yellow Backie: getting around Amsterdam style

Yellow Bike, Amsterdam-based bike tour and rental service, introduced Yellow Backie: Amsterdam style hitchhiking. The initiative seeks to spark some love between Amsterdam locals and its visitors by embracing a famous Dutch custom - riding on the luggage rack of a friend's bike.

How it works

All Amsterdammers with a bike are invited to swap their luggage rack for a free yellow one at a Yellow Bike store. By doing so, they invite friendly strangers to hop on and join them for a fun ride through their beloved city.

Hanny Kooij CEO at Yellow Bike:"We discovered the new generation of tourists doesn't really want to feel like a tourist. They wish to be part of the city and blend in like a local. The only way to really do this is to be guided by someone who knows the city by heart."

Results

The response was overwhelming. Within minutes after releasing the video, the news traveled the entire world. From the Netherlands to Brazil, Thailand to the United States. With presence in major media like The Guardian, CNN, National Geographic, CONTAGIOUS, and The Daily Mirror the idea reached millions of people in over 95 different countries.

More importantly, hundreds of locals joined our mission with a still growing number of Backie drivers offering their bike and knowledge to like-minded people from all over the world. Yellow Backie is a concept by Wilmar/Matthijs. A freelance creative team based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
