MTN SA's chief technology officer resigns - Report

Giovanni Chiarelli, chief technology officer (CTO) of MTN South Africa, has resigned, according to reports by MyBroadband and TechCentral. The news was announced to staff by CEO Godrey Motsa in an email. Chiarelli's last day will be at the end of December.

The CTO joined MTN in November 2016 from Vodafone Romania. "He has 22 years of experience in IT, working for multinational corporations such as Infostrada, Accenture, Telecom Italia and Vodafone Group," TechCentral's report states.

Motsa said the following in his email:

“Giovanni joined MTN South Africa five years ago in November 2016, and he immediately set about building a network and information technology team that would become the envy of the industry. It is extraordinary what Giovanni and his people have achieved in just five years. Some of you may have forgotten, but five years ago, MTN’s network and IT systems were average against our competitors. Giovanni revolutionised all that.

“It is important to remember that IT systems and networks cannot be fixed by money alone. It requires a team of dedicated people, working through the length and breadth of the organisation, developing the strategies, the operational, management and maintenance plans, always with a clear vision for the future. This is how Giovanni delivered Mzansi’s Bozza network.

“The Chiarelli household has made huge sacrifices for MTN, not in the least when Giovanni was separated from his family for 12 months through the worst of the South African and Italian lockdowns.”

Motsa also said that MTN South Africa will announce a new CTO soon.
