The Botswana Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism granted its formal approval to the ESIA subject to the compliance with laws and regulations of authorities on 28 June 2016.

"We are delighted to have received ESIA approval for the Mabesekwa Export Independent Power Project (MEIPP), which is a major milestone in the project. The ESIA together with the existing water rights, surface rights and completed feasibility studies bring us much closer to bringing the MEIPP into production,” says Shumba Energy managing director, Mashale Phumaphi.

The proposed mine will be open strip, and includes truck and shovel operation with a central crushing station and conveyor to the power plant. Rehabilitation will be done concurrent to the mining operation.

In addition, Shumba has submitted a scoping report and has received approval on the terms of reference for its Sechaba Coal independent power project and associated 400KV transmission line.
