Telkom signs 6% pay deal with CWU

Telkom and the Communication Workers' Union (CWU) signed a three-year pay deal in Pretoria on Thursday (25 July)
Telkom signs 6% pay deal with CWU

Telkom's chief executive Sipho Maseko said the general salary increase would be 6%.

The agreement‚ effective for three years backdated to 1 April this will last until March 31‚ 2016. It provided for an accelerated process to rectify salary disparities within the organisation.

"Telkom is determined to avoid unfair income differentials‚" Maseko told reporters.

The two smaller Telkom unions‚ the SA Communications Union (Sacu) and Solidarity‚ were consulting their members about the agreement.

"Sacu has indicated their intention to sign the agreement‚" said Maseko, adding that he believed Sacu would sign early next week. About 16‚800 employees would directly benefit from the agreement.

"We are dedicated as Telkom to make sure that the company returns to its glorious past," Maseko claimed.

The CWU's president Cecil Mokhantso said he was pleased with the deal‚ which he described as not ideal but realistic. "Obviously it is not in our interest to see Telkom go down," Mokhantso said.
