Finders Keepers kicks off in Gauteng
If you're looking to spend a few days out and about in the "Province of Gold", there are an abundance of sites and attractions to explore and discover the very best that Gauteng has to offer.
The team first explored the ancient Tswaing Crater in the city of Tshwane and Cradle of Humankind, where they visited Maropeng and the wonder-filled Sterkfontein caves. They also enjoyed Glenburn Lodge’s legendary buffet.
From the ancient past, they chugged forward a few hundred thousand years to the era of the steam train, still alive and kicking in Gauteng, where Reefsteamers offer tours from Germiston to the Irene market or the Magaliesberg; and Friends of the Rail run trips from Pretoria to the diamond mining town of Cullinan. While exploring Pretoria, the team visited the Sammy Marks Museum and the Voortrekker Monument, before relaxing at the Court Classique Hotel in Arcadia and the magnificent Intundla Game Lodge and Bush Spa in Dinokeng.
In Jozi, the Finders Keepers team took in Liliesleaf Farm, the National Museum of Military History and the Apartheid Museum in downtown Johannesburg. They then embarked on the wild rides and casino thrills of Gold Reef City, before retiring to the luxurious Tsogo Sun Gold Reef City hotel. They also got an authentic taste of 1950’s Sophiatown, courtesy of the fine dining and shebeen swinging at Back o’ the Moon.
Back to the future/present: the team discovered some great tours of trendsetting Johannesburg and its surrounds. They explored Jozi’s mix of culture, creative edge and urban grit with tours by Past Experiences - who also helped the team explore Creative Jozi, Spicy Fordsburg, the bars of Braamfontein and more. Master storyteller, Robin Binckes then introduced the team to the vibrant township of Alexandra with an eye-opening tour.
