Entries opened 6 August for the eight-day expedition, which departs from Johannesburg on 20 September and finishes in Cape Town on 27 September 2014. Entries close 6 September 2014.

Conceptualised by the Mountainshak Adventures team, who created and run the Put Foot Rally, The Dunlop Hamba is a self-drive tour through five provinces with a number of unique South African experiences along the way. Adventurers will experience nature conservation outside Pietermaritzburg, visit Nelson Mandela's birthplace and ride ostriches in Outdtshoorn, and help improve the lives of those less fortunate with shoe drops and a library donation. There's an even a chance to run a rugby coaching clinic with some of the SA Rugby Legends in Queenstown.

There will be plenty of opportunity to let your hair down with organised social festivities along the way and a mega-braai blast on 24 September - National Heritage Day, where the travellers will get to cook the boerie that they were taught to make earlier in the day.

8-day adventure

"The Dunlop Hamba has been timed to take place during South Africa's heritage week so that only four days' leave is required to enjoy this truly remarkable eight day adventure," says Daryn Hillhouse, founder of MountainShak Adventures. "We believe that every South African benefits from sight-seeing in our own country, so we've planned an unforgettable route that embraces the uniquely South African ideal of community or 'ubuntu,' while leading us through our largest cities and oldest villages."

Says Deane Nothard, Group Manager Marketing for Dunlop, "As a brand with such a rich heritage, both globally and in South Africa, Dunlop was looking for something of this nature that merged the elements of heritage, adventure and community projects in a rally format to showcase where Dunlop's range of tyres can take you."

Participation in this road-trip of a lifetime costs R8,400 per vehicle for a team of four members. This entry includes: a Heritage Day braai, four checkpoint parties, four days' worth of charity projects followed by a closing party hosted by South African Breweries as well as all the logistics and organisation that go into creating a truly memorable discovery of South Africa's heritage. There is also the opportunity to win a seat for you and two friends in one of Dunlop's lead vehicles.

All vehicle categories are welcome in The Dunlop Hamba, including supercars, vintage cars, regular cars and SUV / 4x4s. Teams are welcome to plan their own route to each checkpoint, which can include highway or off-road driving, although there will be a recommended route with some key highlights.

The Dunlop Hamba is a great experience for a group of friends or a corporate team. The activities en route, both cultural and social, as well as the various charity initiatives, are perfect occasions to see our beautiful country while giving back and empowering the local communities.
