NSRI evacuates seriously injured fishing trawler crew member

After a doctor assessed the patient's condition using radio telephone, it was decided that the patient required immediate evacuation to an appropriate medical facility for treatment. NSRI helicopter unit volunteer duty crew, two paramedics, and a flight crew from the SA Air Force (SAAF) 22 Squadron launched the medical rescue operation using one of 22 Squadron's Oryx helicopters, says the Ports and Ships website.
Arriving at the trawler, a paramedic and an NSRI rescue swimmer were winched onto the vessel and the patient was stabilised before he was flown to Cape Town's Groote Schuur Hospital in a stable but serious condition, with a chest injury, a fractured arm and an eye injury, Ports and Ships website reports.
